The literal meaning of Black Magic is to make something appear in a form other than its real one. Magic occurs when a Magician, Sorcerer, Soothsayer etc makes falsehood appear to be true or makes something appear differently to people in other than its true form.
The technical meaning of black magic is anything of which the cause is hidden and which appears in a form other than its real one with the intention to distort the reality of things and deceive. There has been a huge difference of opinion among the scholars because of its nature so the definitions vary widely. However, black magic is anything that the cause of which is hidden and which appears in a form other than its real one with the intention to distort the reality of things and deceive.
There has been a wide difference of opinion among the scholars of fiqh, jurists and other scholars because of its nature, so the definition varies widely. Sihr is anything that the cause of which is hidden, and which appears in a form other than its real one, with the intention to distort the reality of things and deceive. Al Badawi said what is meant by sihr is that one seeks to be close with Shaytaan to achieve what man cannot accomplish by himself. Not just anybody can achieve this goal of acquiring the knowledge of magic, the soul of the person has to be as evil as Shaytaan. The knowledge of witchcraft is based on certain jewels and numbers, looking at star signs, astrology and taking objects and picture of the person and applying them at the correct time and words of evil and immorality are used. In this he seeks satanic help, and this is the way the person is afflicted in a strange way, which cannot be explained to the mind of man. This is against the laws of Islam. Sihr is made up of the effects of evil spirits and the reaction of the soul whether it be weak or strong to combat the force. The Hanbali’s say sihr is knots, speaking spells, writing, and acts that effects a person heart, body, or mind indirectly.
Al Badawi (RA) said what is meant by back magic is that one seeks to be close to the Shaytaan in order to achieve that which man cannot accomplish by himself. Not anyone can achieve the goal of acquiring the knowledge of magic; the soul of the person has to be evil and wicked as Shaytaan. The knowledge of witchcraft is based on certain jewels and numbers, looking at star signs, astrology and taking objects and pictures of a person and then applying them at the correct time along with words of evil and immorality. In this he seeks satanic help and this is the way the person is afflicted in a strange way which cannot be explained logically. All of this is against the laws of Islam.
The Hanbali’s say black magic is knots, speaking spells, writing and acts that effect a person’s heart, mind or body indirectly.
Ibn Qudama Al-Maqdisi (RA) said black magic is a set of knots, incantations and words uttered or written, carried out in such a way as to affect the body of the subject, his heart or mind without coming into contact with him/her. The reality of black magic is that there are types that can kill, sicken or thwart a man’s sexual intercourse with his wife. Other types can separate spouses and make them hate or love each other. (Al-Mughni)
Ibn Al-Qayyim (RA) said black magic is a combination of the effects of evil spirits and the reaction of natural forces. (Zaad Al Ma’ad)
Black Magic is an agreement between a sorcerer and a shaytaan which stipulates that a sorcerer fulfill the shaytaan’s requests by committing certain illegal or polytheistic acts in return for the shaytaan to assist and obey the sorcerers requests. Below are some examples of the conditions that a sorcerer must fulfill:
using the Qur’an as footwear to go to the toilet writing some Qur’anic versus with filth writing some Qur’anic versus with menus discharge writing some Qur’anic versus under the sorcerer’s feet anagrammatising (writing in reverse) the opening chapter (Al-Fatihah) of the Qur’an. performing prayers without ablution remaining in a state of Janaaba (major impurity) sacrificing animals in the name of shaytaan and not in the name of Allah and placing the carcass at a location specified by the shaytaan. prostrating to other than Allah (SWT), whether it is a human, jinn, planet, object etc committing incest writing incantations with that which constitutes disbelief It is thus clear that the Jinn do not assist the sorcerer without something in return, and the greater the sorcerers disbelief, the faster and more obedient the shaytaan is to him/ her in executing the orders given.
here are two types of Magic, they are:
Through suggestion, illusionists, mediums, tricks, deception and the speed of the hand illusion. The use of evil spirits, sorcery, witchcraft, voodoo etc which all have an effect on man as a whole. Magic can only have the capability to affect aspects of a person’s life by the will of Allah (SWT). Below are some examples of things that people perform magic to:
Upon a husband and wife to cause separation To suppress a man’s desire for his wife and the wife’s desire for her husband To cause miscarriage, blocking of the fallopian tubes, disabling the ovaries, fertility issues Constant bleeding for a woman or the opposite wherein no menstrual cycle takes place Causing a man to love a particular woman so he marries her or vice-versa To encourage a person to fall into adultery and immorality whether the motive of the magician is for love, revenge or to destroy a person’s reputation To separate families and destroy them To torment a person with insomnia, loss of appetite, daydreaming, tightness in chest, sadness and depression, a feeling of pain the body etc Using magic for murder by various methods, e.g. arson in the home. This can happen by the jinn carrying it out themselves in a physical form or by taking possession of a person Magic can be used in robberies, extortion, deceptive scamming of a person in their home, theft of valuables, obtaining of money or bank details without a person’s will Magic is used to affect businesses and trade, whether small or major corporations Magic can be used to cause all types of sicknesses and illnesses even diseases that doctors themselves cannot define Magic can be used in the kidnapping of people To cause illusions i.e. tricks of the eyes so people cannot see what is really happening, as in the time of the Prophet Musa (peace be upon him) Magic can be cast upon a piece of land wherein the intent is to destroy the land and stop any rain falling onto it In a person’s character, habits, ethics and transactions In harming animals or insects or using them during the magic process
Prevention of magic could be done in a legitimate/ permissible way or in a forbidden way, which would constitute shirk. The same goes with the curing of magic. It could be done through a legitimate/ permissible method or by that which is forbidden in the religion. Therefore it is important to seek protection in Allah (SWT) daily from magic because of its great dangers and many complications to a person.
Discussing the topic of the different types of treatment of magic is a long discussion and a paragraph is not sufficient. Many methods have been narrated to us through our pious predecessors. However from the permissible methods which can be used to treatment magic and its like are:
The correct faith. This is no doubt a help in the battle against magic and magicians The 5 daily prayers and protecting them through offering additional recommended prayers. The next best after the 5 prayers is the night prayers Reading the Qur’an and in specific surat Al-Baqarah every three days. This is a huge step towards the prevention of sihr by the will of Allah (SWT) Morning & evening supplications and the other supplications such as before eating, before sleeping, leaving the home, entering the masjid etc Eating seven Ajwa dates every morning Taking precautions and being vigilant from those who practice sihr and who ask for it, and staying away from the books of sihr Ruqya programs against sihr
A person who afflicts others by the evil eye is known as “Al-A’in” and a person affected by the evil eye is called “Al-Ma’yoon”. Ibn Al Qayyim (RA) said in his book Zaad al Ma’ad: “It is the arrow that is taken out from the soul of the envious individual, the one whom causes the affliction of the evil eye, and then it is fired upon the subject of the evil eye. This individual can be affected sometimes and manage to escape it at other times. If one encounters this and is exposed to it then there will be no protection from its effect, however it then becomes imperative if one encounters this to take care and prepare themselves with the best defense and not allow it to be implanted upon them. it is in this manner that a person can protect themselves from the envious individual and not be effected by them. Sometimes these arrows return to the one whom they belong and this archery makes the envious individual feel the same negativity in his life like the negatively he tried to push on the subject.
Allah (SWT) says:
“And indeed, those who disbelieve would almost make you slip with their eyes when they hear the message and they say, "Indeed, he is mad.’” (Al-Qalam: 51)
Ibn Katheer (RA) uses this verse as evidence to show that the evil eye is real and that it has the ability to effect people since Allah (SWT) mentions ‘those who disbelieve would almost make you slip with their eyes when they hear the message’.
An incident which is narrated from the time of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ saw Quraish ask some people who were known to give the evil eye to another person which could cause illness, death or some other effect to put it on the Prophet ﷺ. However, Allah (SWT) protected the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ from those who were intent on destroying him with Ayn.
Ibnul Qayyim (RA) mentioned in his book Zaad al Ma’ad that some people have denied the effects of Ayn; and he describes these people as arrogant with no knowledge.
According to some scholars the concept of effecting a person with the evil eye (Ayn) can be likened to the effect of when a person walks into a room and they feel embarrassment or shyness due to people looking at them, perhaps causing the face to change color. Another example could be where someone sees someone they fear and they become pale in the face.
Ibnul Qayyim (RA) describes it as a physical or spiritual effect that leaves the eye and effects the human being.
There are different types of Evil Eye which a person can become afflicted with. They are:
(العين) Ayn - The envious eye from someone who may love or know you and not have evil intentions towards you.
(الحســـد) Hasad - The evil eye from someone who hates or dislikes you or something you have but wants it removed from you.
(النفس) Nafs - The envious eye which a person can put on themselves.
(النظرة) Nathara - The envious eye which comes from the Jinn.
Evidence for the different types of Evil Eye
Ayn
The Prophet ﷺ said: “The evil eye is real and if anything were to overtake Qadr (divine decree), it would have been the evil eye…”. This alludes to the speed of the evil eye and expresses that if anything was to overtake the decree of Allah it would have been the evil eye, i.e. in its speed.
Hasad
Iblees envied Adam (AS) as he disliked his creation and the fact he was ordered to prostate to him. He thought he was better because he was made from fire and Adam (AS) was created from clay. Therefore it was only envy which pushed iblees to transgress and disobey the order of Allah (SWT).
Nafs
The Prophet ﷺ “Whoever among you sees something in himself or in his possessions or in his brother that he likes, let him pray for blessings for it because the evil eye is real.”
Narrated by Ibn al-Sunni, Al-Haakim and classed as saheeh by Al-Albaani 243.
Nathara
This originates from the evil eye of a Jinn. The evidence for this is the narration of Umm Salamah (RAA) who said the Prophet ﷺ saw in her house a slave girl with a discoloration on her face so he said: “Perform Ruqya for her, for she has been afflicted by the eye of a Jinn.”
From the above, we see that the evil eye can be given by a human or by a Jinn. It is also known that animals can give the evil eye too when they look at something. There are many stories and encounters concerning this and Allah knows best.
Narrated from Abdullah Ibn Abbas (RAA) that the Prophet ﷺ said: “The evil eye is real and if anything were to overtake the divine decree it would have been the evil eye. When you are asked to take a bath (to provide a cure) from the influence of the evil eye, you should take a bath.” (Muslim, Ahmad and Tirmidhi) - Bath for Ayn
The Sunnah method is to wash yourself from the water of the wudhu of the person who gave you the ayn if the identity of the person is known. If you don’t know who gave the ayn or their water is not available then wash yourself with water that is recited on called Ruqya water as many times a day as possible; 3-4 times is good.
Narrated Aisha (RAA), she said the Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to tell me to recite Ruqya for protection against the evil eye. (Bukhari and Muslim)
Recite Surat Al-Baqarah daily; minimum once but more if possible. For those of us that struggle with the recitation itself or with difficulty completing the recitation during one session, it is advised to listen to the audio recitation and put your finger on the words of the Mushaf as your following the recitation.
Recite Ayat ul Kursi, Surat Al-Falaq and An-Naas throughout the day while doing chores, shopping etc
Recite verses of Ayn,
If you were reading and/or memorising Qur’an before you were afflicted, then continue to read/ or memorise the same amount of Juz with the intention of Ruqya, in addition to above
Listen to the Ruqya audio Al Ayn
If the Ayn is related to education, then add Al Ilm audio. Signs of this are you don’t want to pick up the books etc
Daily Adhkar are very important
For Example; You go to a sheikh because you are suffering from certain problems regardless of what they are, you may think that you need spiritual help. So you go to the sheikh and tell him what your problem is. He then says: "What's your name?" so you tell him. Then he says "what's your mothers name?". At this point, you should thank them very much and walk away without telling them your mothers name.
The reason behind this is that the Jinn need 3 things in order to identify you when they ask each other about you. they need a name, the mothers name, and some traces, which bring us to number 2.
Traces are known as: hair, skin, nails, spit, vomit, urine, fesis, blood, sperm, pre-sperm, vaginal extracts, clothes, picture, or belongings. For example, if you go to a magician, to ask them about your own personal problem, they will ask one of these things from you.
Without you knowing them, or seeing them from before, they begin to tell you about things that happened to you in the past that only you know or your closest family members may know. This is a trick from the Shaitan as all Jinns see each other like we see each other. The magician sends JInns to inquire about your history after knowing your name and mothers name, and are given traces of you. Then these Jinns begin to interview the Jinn that Jinn that has accompanied you for your entire life.
Reciting Quran, for it has a great effect in removing (the effects of) sihr. Ayat al-Kursiy, the ayahs (verses) of sihr from Surat al-A’raf, Surat Yoonus and Surat Ta-Ha, Surat al-Kafirun, Surat al-Ikhlas and al-Mu’awwadhatayn should be recited over the person who has been affected by sihr, or into a vessel.
